What is Juvederm® and How Does it Work?

What is Juvederm® Facial Filler?

Juvederm® is a popular and widely used family of dermal fillers. It adds volume using biologically safe ingredients that lift, contour, and smooth the skin. The Juvederm® family contains several filler products that vary in properties, such as viscosity, longevity, and projection, to treat various concerns. These fillers mainly use a material called hyaluronic acid. This molecule is safe as it’s a natural substance that mimics our very own hyaluronic acid found in our bodies.

How Does Juvederm® Work?

Juvederm® fillers come in a variety of formulas. Each formula has different properties and characteristics that make it ideal for different areas of the face and different treatment goals. The regularly growing Juvederm® family includes:

Juvederm® Ultra XC

Ultra is designed to treat moderate to severe lines and wrinkles, especially nasolabial folds and marionette lines. It can last up to a year. Like many other Juvederm® formulas, it contains lidocaine to make injections more comfortable. 

Juvederm® Ultra Plus XC

Ultra Plus offers effective lip plumping for naturally thin lips or age-related thinning. With several lip filler options available, your injection specialist can choose the best one to give you the results you want to see. 

The following Juvederm® formulas use an advanced type of cross-linking that improves their resilience and helps them last longer. 

Juvederm® Voluma

Voluma is the longest-lasting hyaluronic acid cheek filler. Your injection specialist uses it to restore volume or define your mid-face. This filler has a dense, resilient formula that lets it stay in place and keep working for longer (it is indicated to last up to 2 years) and is great for restoring foundation and contour to facial structures like the cheekbones and jawline.

Juvederm® Volbella

Volbella is a smooth, flexible gel that plumps the lips. It can also smooth fine lines around the mouth. A filler in this area must be extremely flexible, so your lips move naturally. Volbella can provide subtle or dramatic plumping depending on your desired results. 

Juvederm® Vollure

Vollure falls somewhere between its family members in density and firmness. It treats moderate to severe lines and wrinkles, especially those around the mouth and nose. These nasolabial folds and marionette lines can dramatically improve with Vollure. 

Juvederm® Volux

Volux is the only FDA-approved hyaluronic acid filler for enhancing jawline definition. This formula offers a stronger, more contoured jaw that lasts up to two years. Volux is a new option in dermal fillers that lets our injection specialists enhance your facial shape. 

Is There Any Downtime With Juvederm®?

You should experience little to no downtime with our Juvederm injectable treatments. While we cannot promise that you will not have bruising, as that is a highly individualized side effect from any injectable treatment, there are several ways that our expert injectors minimize the risks of bruising. Avoiding any blood thinning medications or supplements, like Vitamin E and Advil, about a week before treatment also greatly helps to reduce your bruising risk.  

We also have a helpful device called our “vein finder”  that we sometimes use for treating particularly vascular areas. This device allows us to see more superficial veins in the treatment area so that we may avoid injecting them. Treatment may take as little as fifteen minutes, depending on the extent of work being performed, and you may generally return to your usual activities immediately. Heavy exercise should be avoided for 8-12 hours following treatment. Some people notice minor swelling or sensitivity around the injection area. These will last up to a week.  

How Long Will My Juvederm® Results Last?

Each filler has a unique lifespan based on its intended location. Resilient Juvederm® Voluma may last up to two years, while Volbella may last about six months to 1 year. Vollure, since it is between the two in density, typically lasts about eighteen months. How long a filler lasts is also dependent on which area(s) are being treated, as areas with more movement, like the lips, tend to need reinjection sooner than areas like the jawline.

Am I a Good Candidate for Juvederm®?

Since hyaluronic acid is naturally occurring, Juvederm® is safe for almost anyone. Good candidates for Juvederm® may have asymmetries, lines, wrinkles, or volume loss and want to see improvements.
